How to Renovate your Pantry – DIY your very own Dream Pantry!!

I had been talking about how much my pantry irritated me for a while. Every time I would open the half-broken accordion doors and look at the wired shelving, I would actually cringe. I spent countless nights on the couch, after the kids were in bed, browsing Pinterest for ideas on how to update it, style it, design it; anything to just make it better. It’s so easy to get lost in the world of Pinterest, saving pictures and post to our boards where they live in their own little dream world. I love Pinterest, but it’s also where many of my ideas and plans just….hang out.

Cue Hubby, Bobby the Builder stepping in to save the day! (and my sanity!)

He came home from Lowes with plywood, 1×2’s, and some other supplies and got right to work. I had no idea what he was up to, until he came in the house with a handmade (and very tall) spice rack! I was in awe – and ready for the rest of the closet to be renovated! He quickly built me a larger shelving system on the opposite side of the closet – this was SUCH a great use of previously wasted space. (I fully believe in utilizing every inch of space possible when designing storage spaces!)

He then laid down plywood on top of the wired shelves (MUCH easier to place items on top of!! This was one of my biggest pet peeves). He ended up putting 1x3s on the front of each shelf to cover the remaining exposed wired shelving which you will see in some pictures further down in this post. (It’s funny to look back at the pictures now, I can’t even imagine looking at this again!!)

One of the best feelings of this entire process was clearing out the pantry and filling all of my plastic storage containers and bins. Not having to see all of the different packages made my anxiety levels decrease dramatically! Choosing quality containers and bins not only made my pantry look great, but I knew my food would have a better shelf life (no pun intended!!)

For the Plastic Storage Containers I used a combination of the following (click the links to shop the products):

The black Farm storage bins were a lucky find at our local Big Lots! (hubby actually picked them out!!!) The blue striped storage bins were an Amazon find, and one of my favorites!! I have used them in multiple rooms throughout our home!

After having the pantry completed for a few weeks, I realized there was some more space we could be using 🙂 So hubby built another shelf at the bottom to store canned goods and jars. (see picture on left below) It made a HUGE difference and allowed me to keep the clean and organized appearance for the rest of the closet.

I couldn’t be happier with the way this turned out – this is one of my favorite projects we have completed. The kitchen is definitely the heart of our home, with the pantry being one of the most visible parts – why not make it beautiful!! For the finishing touch, hubby built custom doors with frosted windows – the perfect place for a seasonal touch! (something I will post about later!)
